Making Art With M.I.A.

Childish Gambino just released a new album that I would like to listen to, but right now M.I.A. is feeding my creativity and I must obey.

I picked up a copy of her new album, AIM a couple weeks ago and have grown accustomed to her words and distinct voice rattling around in my head, propelling me forward. Her albums are full of raucous, fully alive sounds and chants that create this perfect M.I.A. bubble of force. Recently, when I was upset by some casual racism I experienced, I drove around aimlessly, blasting several tracks from her past 3 albums. Her voice a vehicle for the pain I could not express.

Naturally, then, when I am in higher spirits, settled down in front of a stack of cardstock, colored pencils and markers, I also turn to M.I.A. as a backdrop for art-making. Her music is full of creative sounds and phrases—and ENERGY. Which is quite conducive to the type of stuff I'm making these days. Colorful, kinetic, and random.

These were so fun to create. Bobbing my head along with the music. I was inspired by the album artwork of a compilation record I was listening to yesterday: 5 Years of Bedroom Suck Records. But honestly the mash-up of color is reminiscent of M.I.A.'s album artwork over the years as well. Trust, I will be making more things like this. I was thinking they might look interesting bigger, printed on cotton fabric! I have many ideas my friends.

Okay, I'm off to listen to Childish Gambino. Bye!

What music do you listen to while you create/work? Let me know in the comments!
